HDD/Boot

I have a dimension 2100 with a seagate 80MB HDD OS is XP Home. One day it decided it was not going to boot, all I got was invalid boot disk, so i called dell they told it was my probably my HDD, so I connected a 98 HDD into it and it booted. But soemthing told me to put the XP HDD into the IBM I took the 98 HDD out of and it flashed no operating system found so i shut it down and put the XP CD into the drive and it booted.

So what could be wrong with the dell.

Oh and a dell tech on my second phone call told me it was my motherboard specifically the PCI connectors, but how caould it be if teh 98 worked fine.

Any ideas.

Have you ran Dell diagnostic's extended test on the hard drive, the procedures for this should be in your owner's manual?

What is the reading of the diagnostic lights on back panel when this happens?

Bev.

I agree with the person that said it was your hard drive because if you Plugged a hard drive from another computer into it and the system recognized it then it certainly isn't the motherboard.  If it was the motherboard of the drive cables no hard drive whatsoever would work in it.  When you plugged the drive that was originally in the Dell into another computer and you get an error saying Operating System Not Found or something along those lines it either means the drive wasn't jumpered properly or the drive isn't being read by the system.  When you plug the cables into the drive does the drive power up?  Hold the drive close to your ear and listen for a slight whining and some light clicking/grinding for a few seconds after you turn the power on?  You might also being able to feel the motor in the drive vibrate when  it's on if you don't get any of this or you hear excessive whining, scraping, crunching, or other repeating noise most likely your drive is dead.  If under the Dell warranty call Dell Tech Support and they will authorize a replacement.  If out of the Delll warranty you can replace the drive yourself with any brand of hard drive you choose just be sure it uses the same cables as the one you are replacing and if it's an IDE drive make sure you set the jumper to Cable Select as that's what Dell uses in their systems.

It is not the HDD, the HDD is working fine in the IBM. Something is wrong with the Dell, it is not reading the HDD or something, but in the BIOS it does show the HDD conected.

We have the Dell HDD in IBM  and its working so it cant be the HDD.

I just curoius why the Dell wont read its own HDD.
