Installing OS and HD not recognized

Trying to reload MS XP Home on a Dimension 4600 and the hard drive is not recognized.  I have reformatted the HDD and everything is hooked up to the motherboard correctly.  I have reseated the IDE cables more than once.  The boot menu says that the HDD is not installed and in the setup the IDE drive is said to be an "unknown device".  What am I missing here?

Assuming that this problem has occurred with your existing drive, the first thing I would do is replace the coin cell CMOS battery on the motherboard.  Dells can do strange things when the back-up cell voltage gets too low.

If that doesn't help, see if your diagnostics can pick up the drive.  If you are using the original drive that shipped with the system you can try to bring them up from the F12 menu.  Run the tests for the drive to see if it is found, and if so, if it is producing errors.

If this is a new parallel interface IDE drive, make sure it is properly jumpered for cable select.
