Motherboard 0RY007 CPU Memory Upgrade

It appears to be an Inspiron 530 motherboard.

The 0RY007 motherboard, supports Core2 Duo processors only, does not support Quad 4.

Note. The 530 systems were build with two different models of motherboards, the 0RY007 and the 0FM586 motherboard that supports, both Quad 4 & Core2 Duo processors.

The fastest Core 2 Duo I've seen listed for an Inspiron 530 is the E8500.  I would also think the E8600 would work since it is a 45nm and 1333 FSB CPU as well, but don't know that for sure.

Have you ever heard of a 0K216C motherboard for the 530?  I found several sites indicating that this motherboard also exists for the Inspiron 530.

Nope, I've not heard of that part number for a Inspiron 530 Mini Tower motherboard.

From what I can tell, the K216C appears to be an overseas version of the 530's motherboard.

In this example, does the 1333 FSB mean that the RAM can go beyond 800 MHz?

Thanks for the input.  It came up on a site that listed specs for it servers and I didn't have any information on this model.

So, a little more research...

The 530 motherboard is based on the G33/ICH9 chipset.  This supports either DDR2 memory at up to 800 MHz or DDR3 at up to 1066 MHz.  Obviously, my 530 supports the former.  So, buying memory faster than the 800 MHz is a waste.  It also supports  1333/1066/800 MHz System bus and suggest the processors listed in the documentation link.  The only thing that I'm not sure of at this point is why Katmandu2 makes the statement that "The 0RY007 motherboard, supports Core2 Duo processors only, does not support Quad 4."  The chipset seems to support the quad, but perhaps the 0RY007 has something about it that can't function with a quad CPU.  That being said, under my system tag, in addition to Core 2 Duo's, Dell offers as upgrades the following:  a Q8200 2.33 GHz 1333 FSB Quad Core Processor, a Xeon Q8300 2.6 GHz Core 2 Quad Processor, and a Q9400 2.66 GHz Quad Core Processor.  Is there any reason to believe that these won't work?

Surely, the Inspiron 530 does not support DDR3 memory has this requires a different slot, to the DDR2 memory.   DDR3 memory will not fit into a DDR2 slot and vice versa.

Thanks!  I had found that the DDR3 did require a different slot, and couldn't work.  However, I was still baffled by the CPU.  I'm still surprised that Dell lists Quad core processors as potential component upgrades under my service tag though.  I ended up ordering an E8500 Core 2 Duo 3.16GHz Processor from Newegg.com.

Nice processor upgrade, but before installing you need to update the BIOS to the latest version.

Hmmmm.   And how do I apply 530_1018.EXE (a Windows, or at least DOS, program) from the Dell-installed Ubuntu OS?  Do they also provide a Linux bios-flash?

As far as I know, you can not upgrade the BIOS though Ubuntu, as the software for this is an .exe that executes in windows.

You could try posting this in the Linux forum HERE and see if there's a solution there.

Well, THAT was painful!  After downloading the 1.0.18 update, I attempted to update several times via FreeDOS bootable CD and USB flash drive methods.  All were unsuccessful, even (thankfully) when I booted into FreeDOS and got a read error running the 530_1018.EXE update utility!!!  I was finally able to accomplish the update by booting with an old Win98 Recovery CD while the USB drive with the update was in the system.  Perhaps, Dell needs to add a little bit to it's support of the Ubuntu community ;-)

BTW:  Microsoft does NOT help this process.  Trying to create a bootable CD from Windows Vista or 7 is even more painful that what I did attempt!
