Power Supply Upgrade options for Optiplex 990 Mini Tower?

Will any ATX Power Supply fit in the 990 MiniTower?

The system comes with 265 watts but I'd like to install a more powerful supply so I can upgrade the video card to whatever I want.

On NewEgg, the sizes of the various power supplies seem to be slightly different dimensions than the Dell Optiplex 990 supply.

Plus, Dell doesn't leave any margin for error in replacing with the exact same dimensions as the original equipment. They have all this aluminum and such preventing even a few millimeters difference in size with the replacement.

I prefer a Corsair Gold 80 Plus.

Thanks.

Only The TOWER Version can use a new power supply.

Hi

I used an ANTEC HIGH CURRENT GAMER HCG-620 PSU and did not need ANY adapters to connect it to the Dell 990MT and 9010MT motherboard. From what I can see any of the Antec High Current Gamer PSUs should be fine. If you're not using the HCG-620 I suggest you google for images of the connectors on the PSU you plan to use.

Another poster also said this PSU is fine:Enermax Modu 82+ 625W ATX12V v2.3 Computer Power Supply EMD625AWT_II.

Be aware that you will have to remove the motherboard and the side case locking mechanism in order to install the Antec...and do some bending and fiddling to get the case locking mechanism back in its place - be careful not to snap parts. Going easy you should be fine.

All the best.

Hi Kapalua,

Did you ever get another PSU? And so, what kind? I now have an Optiplex 990 too, but want a better videocard and thus need more power.

cheers,

Marco

Hi Speedstep, thanks for the update.

I have the tower version. I was also eager to know if the psu dimensions are standard or that I have anything else to take into consideration when changing the psu.

cheers,

Marco

Yo Slowstep!

You didn't put much info in your reply apart from saying that the  ANTEC HIGH CURRENT GAMER HCG-620 would fit into the 990MT.

I bought one and it does fit without any trimming of case or whatever - screws line up perfectly, but the mechanism that locks the side panel to the case had to be removed to slide the psu into place and I can't get it to fit back.

Also, about 80% of the power cables (for drives, PCI-e etc) are not needed, so there is a lot of wiring stuffed into the case (fits in OK). Might be an idea to get a psu that has modular cabling so you can just use what is needed. This will be much tidier. Just ensure dimensions are the same as the Antec HCG-620.

Would have been decent if you had replied to Marco Engel's query....

No matter - I'll figure out a workaround and post it.

So far the new psu works great. I've just got a Gigabyte 9800GT Rev 2.1 in now but I'll be putting a 460 in and will post how it pans out - with any advice on issues to be taken into account.

Cheers, boyos.

I know this is way out of date, but the info is pertinent now and may be of interest to someone. I have a Dell 990 with 2 hard drives I ordered middle of 2012. Wanted a better power supply than stock and found this one to be the only modular one I could find that show to be the same exact dimensions as the stock unit. Little pricier than some non-modular ones with same dimensions such as some Antec units, but it gets very good reviews and I wanted modular if possible. Haven't received it yet but will verify that it works in place of stock w/o problems or mods.

As an update, I have found that with a bit of effort I could refit the slide that holds the side casing closed. So the exercise is a total success. In fact I have done another 990MT as well now, but put the modular version of the Antec psu into this one. It makes a bit of difference as some of the cabling is not needed.

Both machines are run by keen gamers - WOW, LOL etc and even running 15 hours a day the casing is cold to the touch. Quiet and cool with no extra fans, cooling or mods. A great outcome.

Both machines run perfectly (Win 7 Pro 64Bit) with no problems whatsoever.

Thanks,

I just got one cheap and I'm going to make a gaming box out of it.  I'm replacing the power supply and the video card.  This helps a lot.  I already have a really good monitor.

You're welcome. Since then one of them has a GTX760 in it and the other has a GTX970. Both rock on with no issues (run real cool etc) and run Far Cry4 , Doom etc in high to max setting at smooth rates (1080). Remember GPU will have to be mini ITX to fit in lengthwise and width will block some slots on the mobo. Also I think these boys can take 32GB RAM (Dell says 16, but I read somewhere the chipset states 32 (mine have 16GB in them). Have fun!

Thanks again.  I was able to buy a COUGAR A-Series A760 (CGR B3-760) 760W ATX12V  for under $60.  It fit perfectly in the mini-tower without any modifications whatsoever.  Got the GTX 750ti with 4 gig of video ram.  It's rocking now.  I will pick up another 8 GB of ram next month to have 16 GB total. I had 3 500 gig drives laying around, so I put one of those in as well and configured it as a Raid 0.

Sounds good. Happy to be of some help - those machines will probably outlast us!

I'm about the same operation, I mean I need to replace power supply to something bigger than original, so i can use some more powerful videocard than this one built-in. What i'm most afraid is if he original power supply is standard ATX, especially if the power connector (24PIN) being attached to MB does not need any adapter? I've got minitower version with I7 2600 CPU. THX in advance for your support

Just want to pop in and say thank you!! I bought an optiplex 990MT from the Dell Refurbished site last year and I've been using the low-power Radeon HD 6670 with the stock 265W PSU, but it's just not cutting it for the most recent generation of games.  Your answer was super helpful in my search for a replacement.

You're welcome! These machines can make very OK gaming rigs (limited mainly by CPU these days).

Have fun!
