Studio 540 Desktop - Loud Fan & Fan Cycling on/off Issue

If anyone is having a problem with their Studio 540 Desktop with the Fan running all the time and then randomly cycling on and off...the problem is the BIOS. Here's what you need to do to fix it:

1) go to http://ftp.dell.com/bios/

2) Download the latest BIOS file (which was Version 1.1.3 as of 1/31/10) filename: S540113-windows.exe and install it (just don't turn off the machine while installing).

3) If you want to know what fixes/enhancements were made with this revision (and the others) go here:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/previousversions.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=STUDIO540&releaseid=R230050&formatid=-1&deviceid=17084&formatcnt=2&dateid=-1&releasetype=BIOS&servicetag=&typeid=-1&catid=-1&libid=1&impid=-1&osl=en&vercnt=10&os=WLH

For some reason the Support Page shows BIOS version 1.0.7 as the latest which is wrong. Even tech support told me 1.0.7 was the latest. I think they are is keying off the "release date" and not the "build date". Below is a list of the build/release dates for each version. The only one that matters is the Build Date and as you can see 1.1.3 is the latest.

BIOS

Version        Build Date     Release Date
1.0.2          8/21/08        9/23/08
1.0.3          9/19/08        9/27/08
1.0.6          11/3/08        12/17/08
1.0.7          11/25/08       12/15/09
1.0.8          12/12/08       12/23/08
1.0.9          12/25/08       1/8/09
1.0.12         5/11/09        5/26/09
1.0.13         6/4/09         10/19/09
1.1.3          8/25/09        9/7/09

Version 1.1.3 worked for me. I'm happy again. I hope this helps clear up some confusion.

That's strange...those dates are hosed.

Anyway...THANK YOU. It appears to be working great for me, the loud burst of fan noise hasn't happened once since installing 1.1.3. That is one of two issues that has made me regret purchasing this unit.  I still haven't pulled the trigger on buying Window 7 yet. Maybe that will fix the other issues.

Glad I could help...

I wish Dell would figure this out and fix the problem with their website.

I've been experiencing the same issue on my Studio 540.  Upgraded to Bios 1.1.3 several years ago and hte fan problem started.  Tried downgrading but that did not resolve the issue.  Lived with the noise for a long time since it was mostly intermittent.  A few months ago the fan noise got really bad and was happening nearly every time I opened a web browser to a page with any multimedia content.

Since I had already replaced my PSU in the past year (didn't solve the fan issue), I decided to try replacing the CPU cooler.  After reading recommendations from others, I went with this cooler: http://www.arctic.ac/us_en/freezer-7-64-pro.html/.  Simply amazing!  Sitting next to the desktop, I can't even hear if it's on anymore.  Absolutely no fan noise.

Note, this CPU cooler comes with various mounting components to make installation very easy.  However, it seems Dell has used different motherboard suppliers within the 540 line.  This can make a difference in whether you can use in the included mounting clips or not.  In my case, the CPU backplate was not removal from my motherboard (it's what holds the CPU in place) and so the included mounting clips would not work.  Instead I went to the hardware store and bought #4 round-headed machine screws which fit the CPU backplate.

Hope this helps someone else.
