XPS 600 need a new video card

Hi folks, I am new to this forum and need some help. I have a XPS 600 and my video card has died. I need to buy a new one but I want to make sure that I get one that is compatible. Do I need to worry about PCI-e or not?

Yes.  You will need to get a PCIe x16 card and the majority of video cards today are this type.  What card to you currently have and what is the purpose for the card?

The card I have is a nvidia GeForce 6 series, 256MB...my son and I tend to play some pretty graphics intense games like EA SPORTS NHL 2008 and others so I would think I would want to get at least another 256MB card

The majority of new PCI-E cards have at least 512MB of RAM on board.  Many have 1GB, and some as much as 2GB!

Just have a look around, and see what's available on your budget.

If you need help deciding which would be the better option(s) from cards you're considering, either post back in here, or just Google for reviews of the respective cards.

Graphics cards (and CPU's) are reviewed as soon as they're released (some even before), so there'll be no shortage of reviews.

Thanks for your help...here are some cards I am looking at.

1. BFG GeForce 7300 GT 512MB

2. Diamond Multimedia 3450H 512MB PCIE Video Card

3. GeForce 8400GS 512MB 64-bit DDR2 450MHz PCI-E DVI/VGA/TV-Out SLI Ready Video Card

I don't want to spend a ton of money...these are all priced from $64.99 - $69.99.

I would look at a 9 series cards as there really is not any worth getting in the 7 series or even the 8 series anymore.  A 512MB card will be good enough.  My suggestion to start would be the 9500 GT and work your way up from there.  Above the 9500 GT, you would be looking at the 9600 GSO, 9600 GT and then the 9800 GT.  I don't think you would have to go beyond these cards.  A good place to buy video cards is Newegg.com.  Brand preferences are EVGA and XFX

Those are all bottom of the barrel cards and I would not recommend any of them for gaming.  A 9500 GT would be superior to any of those you have mentioned and be the same price.  An 8600 GT would be good also if you can still find one.  The 9500 GT just replaces it.

Thanks for your help. I bought a card from newegg.ca...EVGA 512-P3-N954-TR GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card ...and you were right...price was about the same.

I am still waiting for it to be shipped...so I will hopefully install it this weekend.
