XPS 8500 and quadraphonic sound
I'm considering buying a Dell XPS 8500. I note that there are outputs for front and rear speakers. I would like to get surround sound using four powered speakers (actually, two sets of powered 2.1 speakers that I already own). Can I get surround sound (using a quadraphonic setting for speakers in the Windows 7 audio setup) using just these speakers with the onboard audio outputs?
I don't intend to install a center channel speaker or a separate subwoofer (each of the 2.1 speakers has its own subwoofer) and I don't want to have to purchase a soundcard (at least, not at first) or an external surround receiver.
Do I need additional software to get quadraphonic sound, either from a surround-sound videogame or synthesized from 2-channel stereo music/video?

Hi Keith333,
Welcome to the Community.
As suspected the quadraphonic surround sound settings will only allow you to enhance the output quality. Using these settings you will not be able to connect two sets of speakers in the front and rear ports and get the output from all of them. Only one set of speakers will work at a time.

Hi,
Welcome to the Community.
The XPS 8500 is shipped with the Realtek ALC3800 audio controller which supports 7.1 channel audio.
You can configure the Quadraphonic settings using the Dell Audio by Realtek utility:

Welcome to the Community.
Thank you for your interest in Dell XPS 8500. Also a great question as well. Normally we will not be able to get the output from both the ports because one gets disabled when we connect the speakers to one of the two slots.
XPS 8500 features integrated 7.1 audio with THX TruStudio PC software, if you connect and a 7.1 audio system you can experience two more channels of audio over conventional 5.1 surround sound.
Also we will check on the possibility of splitting the channels using an application, will get back to you in 2 Business days.

The image shows a stereo setup. Am I correct in that if a pair of powered speakers are attached to the front speaker outputs and a second pair of powered speakers are attached to the rear speaker outputs, and the Dell Audio by Realtek utility were set to quadraphonic, that I would get quadraphonic (surround) sound? If so, that's great.

That's too bad. However, I have another question: what is the function of the rear speaker ports?

Hi Keith333,
Normally the rear port is used to connect the speakers and front once are for the head phones. When you connect a headphone to the front port the rear one will get disabled.
