XPS 8500 memory

Thanks for your prompt clarification.  16GB is sufficient for my current needs, but I didn't want to limit my future upgrades.  I will be buying from Dell UK.

One additional question, off thread, is how many partitions are on the C drive as supplied, as I would like to add a data partition without getting into dynamic partitions.

I just checked the Dell U.K. page and it only gives you an option to purchase a XPS 8500 with 8GB memory. However I would recommend that you contact the Dell U.K. Sales at 0844 444 5818 and they might give you an option of configuring a system with upto 16GB memory.

Also, the hard drives ship out with one user accessible partition ‘C’ and the other is a non-user accessible partition ‘D’ which houses the recovery partition. However you would be able to reformat the hard drive and create as many partitions as you wish, once you receive the system.

Not required, the XPS 8500 ships with a 16GB memory option in UK.  You just have to look on page 2 or 3 of the options.

Nothing, so far, makes it worthwhile with one of the two SATA3 ports used for the mSATA slot.  This (mSATA) must be the world's most expensive SSD option.  I can see the logic if you are going to use the mSATA for a cache drive, but it still cripples the machine with respect to RAID configuration or even having separate, fast, system and data drives.

You can bump the XPS 8500 up to 32GB without issue.  I did it right out of the box.  Of course you will need an OS that will use more than 16GB (Windows 7 x64 Professional or better)  The Home Premium will only recognize 16gb max, but the BIOS and utilities like CPU-Z will tell you it sees all 32GB.

I bought a (try not to laugh) "Komputerbay" 32GB kit from Amazon.  Was only about $152 USD.  Be sure you get 1.5v memory.

The XPS 8500 uses an Intel H77 chipset. This means that only two ports can work at 6GB/s.

There are two sata 3 (6GB/s) ports on the XPS 8500 motherboard. One is port 0 and the other is the msata connector.

My XPS 8500 came with a Samsung 830 256GB msata drive built into the motherboard, (Port 5) and a 3TB hard drive connected to port 0. Both work at 6GB/s.

The other 3 ports are 3GB/s.

There are a few posts below which are giving out wrong information. Dell should be helping us sort out their problems.

I personally am using 32GB of memory  in my xps 8500 however please note that inorder to do so your os must be windows 7 pro 64 bit  and bios revision A06 hope this helps

Hello Frank;  I just installed RAM upgrade today on my XPS8500 system.  I purchased 32GB from Crucial.com.  The install was easy and the XPS8500 recognized the new RAM on restart with NO issues.  Crucial does guarantee RAM for lifetime and is certified compatible with XPS system.  I run WIN8 64-bit OS.  Best of luck.

Hi Monssef;  Yes it does.  Reads as:  Memory Installed = 32768MB, Memory Running Speed = 1600MHz, and Memory Technology = DDR3

Of course I am not laughing!  Lol.. Looking into buying KOMPUTERBAY 32 gigs myself. This is what happened to me. Just received my XPS 8500 - exciting. Bought KINGSTON HYPERX 32 GB RAM (8gbx4)  to upgrade it right out of the box like you. The RAM only ran at 1333Mhz, because they had it set up that way be default - one needs to be able to change the timings in order to use the 1600MHZ, unfortunately that cannot be done in the DELL bios.   Do you still have all of those Komputerbay stix in your machine? If that is so, is it running at 1600 or 1333?  I am interested in the performance when you have all 4 stix in.  When I was matching with the original RAM the bios was actually saying it was running at 1600 - perhaps because the original RAM was setting all of them to run at 1600?!  Anyhow, looking to have 32 GB in my machine soon!!!  Do you have the link to the exact item you bought from Amazon?  If you have 32 GB, using the bios and CPUID, is it running at 1600 MHZ?  :) Best wishes, Geo
