dell optiplex 320 wont boot - 6 audible beeps

Hi,

I have the above tower and on startup I just get 6 random audible beeps.

I presume this is a hardware error but dont know where to start

has anyone any ideas

any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes is a HW failure Howard. Also it will help if you tell the pattern in which those are heard like 2-2-2 or 1-2-3 as they have a brief pause in between. Also if you can repply back with the numbers on the front. If the system is not posting it will have a combination of numbers that can give an idea of what is the problem.

hi many thanks for such a prompt reply the beeps are 1-3-2 and light 1 lights momentarily and 3 and 4 are solid no light on no.2 throughout cheers Howard

Try opening the case, then remove and reseat the memory modules and see if it makes a difference.

That beep code is a memory issue.  It can be caused by one of two things: #1 the memory is not properly seated, or #2 the memory modules are not compatible with the machine.  Check and see the speed of the memory.  The optiplex 320's do not appear to like any DDR2 over 5300.  DDR2 6400 will give this error.
