graphics card for dual monitors on OptiPlex 745

Hi there,

I have an OptiPlex 745 purchased recently. The original system includes ATI Radeon X1300. Now I want to upgrade the system, by getting a dual-DVI card, to support dual monitors.

I found some nice card in dell.com, such as the Radeon X1650 XT 256MB (Dell Oart# A0795355), but the OptiPlex 745 is not in the compatible products list of this card.

So my question is that, does this card work for OptiPlex 745? If not, is there any other card with 2 DVI for OptiPlex 745?

Thanks a lot,
Smth

You failed to mention the chassis size. If you have a tower, most PCIe cards will work fine (I'd be conservative with the really high end cards that need a lot of power). If you have a desktop or small form factor your choices will be limited due to the requirement of a low profile card.

Also, is it possible to use at the same time the onboard card and a PCIe one (I have an ATI x600), so I could use a dual monitor setup? I'm using a 745 SFF, which makes it tough to find a dual-port low profile PCIe card.

Adding a PCIe (16x) videocard disables the onboard video (Intel designed the chipsets like this so that all resources from the chipset will be given to the added videocard and not be shared).

Yes, unfortunately that's the case, which "forces" people to buy dual-video cards :)
