Capacity: The Key Ingredient of an Agile Cloud Infrastructure

Increasingly, companies have adopted cloud computing, extensively leveraging the ‘as-a-service’ model, a fundamental of cloud computing. The as-a-service model enables consumers to ‘use when needed,’ the definition of pay as you go. However, despite the widely-held belief that cloud computing offers limitless capacity, the possibility of scenarios where the cloud infrastructure could actually run out of capacity remains.

To ensure that sufficient resource capacity is available to meet the on-demand, rapid elasticity, and resource pooling characteristics of cloud computing, service providers and IT departments that host a private cloud need a different approach to managing capacity for the cloud. In fact, next to security, capacity management is the most important attribute contributing to the functionality of cloud computing.

In this Knowledge Sharing article, Amrith Raj Radhakrishnan examines the potential dangers of overlooking capacity when dealing with cloud computing. The article identifies cloud infrastructure components that require continuous attention, trending, and analysis. Taking measures prescribed by Amrith to create an on-demand and elastic resource pool will help cloud service providers or IT managers of an enterprise virtualized infrastructure create specific capacity management plans for sustainability and ensure proper deliverables.
