Does Cloud Storage Portend “Creation By Destruction” of Traditional Storage?

When developing an infrastructure roadmap, finding the best approach to re-using conventional storage systems for cloud solutions raises a variety of questions, among them:

• How can a large company transform its current storage services to storage services for private and/or hybrid cloud? If the ability to provide storage on demand is considered the key feature of cloud storage, what changes are required in the traditional enterprise storage infrastructure based on enterprise and midrange storage to develop cloud-based storage services?

• Using application taxonomy into ACID and BASE, should the traditional storage systems oriented to management of structured data be kept only for ACID type applications? Or can they be upgraded to become storage components of new cloud infrastructure?

• What features make storage “cloud storage”? What are the evolving cloud storage standards—i.e., Cloud Data Management Interface and others?

In this Knowledge Sharing article, Mikhail Gloukhovtsev outlines best practices for monitoring and configuring alerts related to thin pools and FAST/VP in a VMAX storage environment and  proposes answers to the questions above.
