The Personal Cloud Goes to the Dogs

In this Knowledge Sharing article, Chad DeMatteis presents a case study covering the research, implementation, and lessons learned of a personal cloud deployment for Louie’s Legacy, a small non-profit animal rescue organization. The article demonstrates how even small organizations with limited resources can share content easily and economically.

The first section compares and contrasts several available public cloud solutions from Amazon, Google, and Dropbox, as well as physical cloud appliances. Several factors are considered, including base cost, capacity costs, limitations, and data protection. Based on those factors, Chad determined which best met the needs of the rescue and explains why he chose Iomega StorCenter to host the personal cloud solution that would enable Louie’s Legacy employees and volunteers to manage and share files.

The second section looks at the actual cloud configuration, showing step-by-step how Chad configured the Iomega and the personal cloud for use by the rescue. He also includes technical limitations and challenges encountered throughout the process.

Finally, Chad covers the benefits gained with the Iomega personal cloud such as ease of management, end-user experiences, and lessons learned; ultimately, describing the overall transformation realized by the personal cloud.
