Dell EqualLogic PS6510X having less than 48 disks

Is it possible to configure a PS6510X with less than 48 disks initially, then grow the RAID 10 over time by adding drive pairs?

If possible, does the RAID 10 expansion happen automatically or is there some place in the JAVA Web Interface or Command Line to initiate the growth?

Also, I've seen some online references to PS6510XV existence, but found no matching documentation on Dell website.  Does the "V" indicate that it supports 15K RPM SAS HDs?  Or were the online references just in error as to the unit's existence?

Hello,

 There are two supported drive configurations.  24 drives or 48 drives, nothing in between.  You can't add drives two at a time.  The 6500 uses multiple RAIDsets for better performance and less impact during a rebuild.

 6510E = 7200RPM drives

 6510X = 10K RPM drives

 6510XV = 15K RPM drives

 6510ES = 7200 RPM with 7x 400GB SSDs

 The E,X,XV,S designations run across all models.  It tells you what drive types were installed when it was built.   But not all models support all drive sizes.

 You also must use Dell EQL certified drives, you cannot use off the shelf OEM drives, even if they are the same part number and firmware revision.

 When you do add drives, you need power down the 65xx install the drives, then power back on.  The new drives will be added automatically and the space will be available once the RAIDset builds complete.

Regards,

Don
