Equallogic SAN PS100 Reset

I've got a PS100 Equallogic SAN that' I'm trying to rebuild.  I entered the 'reset' command and now I'm trying to figure out how to log back into the unit.  What's the default IP, or method to access the array after a reset?

Do I need to connect to the unit via a serial cable to start the new configuration?  I didn't find any docs online to help guide me through the installation.  I was hoping to connect to the serial interface, but do I need a special cable for this?  My Cisco console cable doesn't look like it will work, it just spits out jibberish.  I used the typical settings:

  • 9600 baud
  • One STOP bit
  • No parity
  • 8 data bits
  • No hardware flow control

Cheers,

There is no default IP address when you reset an array.

Two options,  1 use the serial port or install a HIT kit on a server on the same subnet as the array.  Part of the HIT kit is the Remote Setup Wizard.  It will scan that subnet for unconfigured EQL arrays.  Then it will guide you through configuring the basic setup of the array

This unit is definitely out of support, so I assume the HIT kit would only be accessible through a support contract, correct?  Am I correct, that the Cisco blue console cable won't work?

Thanks for the quick reply Don!!

Re: Cisco cable, yeah, that will never work, its not wired the same as a standard serial port.  The settings you listed are correct.

Here's the cable pin out

Solution Title Serial Console Cable, Identification for Type I, II Controllers, Pinouts for RJ-45 connector

Solution Details Type-1:

FRU PN=95-0444. Cable "dongle" will have a white ID tag with 51-0003-02 marked on it. It is 10 inches long, black, with silver DB-9(M) and a micro DB-9 on the other end.

You can order the dongle as a Molex part number 83421-9052, by looking for it on google. You will also need a Null modem cable to go with it if you don't have one, easy to find, even most Radio Shack's have them.

Type-2:

FRU PN 95-0517. Cable will have a white ID tag with 51-0008 marked on it. It is 10 feet long, black with a DB-9(F) and the RJ-45 on the other end

Here is the pinout for the RJ-45 serial connector used on the EqualLogic Type-2 (SATA 2 Control Module):

1 - DTR (out)

2 - CTS (in)

3 - Chassis Gnd

4 - RxD (in)

5 - TxD (out)

6 - Sig Gnd

7 - RTS (out)

8 - DSR (in)

In current firmware versions we do not purposefully set, or respond to, any of the control signals (DTR, CTS, RTS, DSR), so you should either configure the device you are connecting so that it ignores them, or provide local loopbacks as needed.

The serial settings are: 9600 baud, no parity, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no flow control.

Alright, so I made my own cable and was able to connect to the SAN.  It worked great Don, thank you!!

So I entered the command 'reset' followed by enter the DeleteMyDataNow and the unit rebooted.  But now I can't get any further, as it holds up at the following prompt.

SP:1362093963.15:emm.c:2127:INFO:28.2.30:Control modules have completed initializing, and failover is now operational.

82:57:SP:28-Feb-2013 18:26:43.220058:cache_driver.cc:1002:INFO:28.2.39:Active control module cache set to write-back mode.

What does this mean?  I'm just trying to get access to the GUI, so I can rebuild this entire SAN.  Did I brick this unit?

Those messages are normal after a reboot, which happens when you reset an array.

Using the serial port, login as grpadmin  pwd: gpradmin

You will be prompted to run setup.

If will ask you to name that MEMBER, that physical array.   Then specify which ETH port to enable, default is ETH0, then assign IP address / netmask / GW.

Then it will ask you for a Group Name.  This is the top level name.   Then you'll provide the Group IP, where you go for managment and iSCSI discovery.

You'll also set the grpadmin password and the MEMBERSHIP password.  That's the password used when you add new members that group.  It can be same as grpadmin

One you finish that you will be at the CLI prompt.

Before I even set up the RAID I enable the other interfaces

GrpName>  mem sel eth sel 1 ipaddress x.x.x.x.x netmask x.x.x.x

GrpName> mem sel eth set 1 up

 Repeating for the other interfaces.

Since you don't have a contract I suggest you use RAID6.

 GrpName>mem select raid-policy raid6

You can also do all this via the GUI once you are at the GrpName> prompt

Morning Don!

I'm actually unable to get to a prompt.  It's currently showing what I showed above, and anything I press it does nothing at the prompt.  If I switch the serial cable to the secondary controller, I can login and get to the menu.  But of course I can't really do much off the secondary.  Isn't that odd?  I've actually let it sit at this prompt overnight.  I've tried enter, ctrl p, esc ...all kinds of key combinations.

Any ideas?  I hope I didn't brick the unit :/

For whatever reason, I can’t type anything when it says LOGIN:

I just failed over to the secondary controller, by slightly pulling out the other controller and it did its thing in displaying logs.  I’m on the LOGIN: prompt but it’s not accepting anything I type.  It’s like I’m locked out, or my keyboard doesn’t work, yet I just logged in previously to the secondary controller.

So I did another reboot just now, and I got a login prompt but I wasn’t able to type anything.  After about 5 seconds or so, it continued with the status messages.  Please see below:

I tried hitting enter a couple times, but I get nothing.  Let me try to failover to the secondary.  The login prompt simple says LOGIN: and nothing else.

Something is amiss with the cable or your environment.  Is your PC plugged into same outlet as array?  Seen serial port problems when the ground is at different potential between two systems.

What do you mean by "shell"    The odds of both CMs going bad at same time are pretty small.

Make sure you have no flowcontrol.   What are you using as a client.  I would suggest putty.

Hello,

The serial console will always dump out any console messages, did you try hitting enter a couple of times?

When you say you get to the prompt, does it say that you are on the secondary CM?

If so, then you can try to physically pull out the primary CM a couple of inches and it will fail over to the secondary.

The reset wasn't complete, there is at least one disk that still have a RAID label on them.  Did you have a failed or flacky disk before the reset?   You could try pulling out the disks one at a time until you find them.  Power it off, pull disk, power it up.

I'm using Putty.  In the link above, in the diagram for pin 3 GND he shows SHELL.  I wasn't sure what that meant, but I made my cable based off that diagram.  Is that wrong?  I've confirmed no flowcontrol i set.

And thanks for taking the time to assist me troubleshoot, I greatly appreciate it.

I did make my own cable, so that could certainly be the problem.  But I was able to login to the secondary with no problems, and enter commands.  Isn't that a big strange?  I'm using a laptop to connect to the array.

I made the cable based off this diagram in the thread.

en.community.dell.com/.../19389192.aspx

For shell, I left it empty.  Do you think that's my problem?  What exactly does Shell mean?
