Equallogic space used on a LUN in Vsphere

Hi,

I am sure this question has been asked in one form or another but I couldnt find a direct answer to my particualar issue. I have a Dell PS4100X SAN and Vsphere 5 environment. I have installed the HIT kit and everything is configured correctly. I have created several luns on the SAN all of which are thick provisioned. I have then created my datastores on these luns. The virtual machines I have created are all thick provisioned.

Originally on my first datastoer I had a vm which was about 800GB in size. I moved this off to my Tier2 SAN so that i could place other vm's on the LUN. However, the LUN in the HITKIT plugin and the ps storage group manager show that the LUN has that 800GB still used. VMWare shows that I have freed the space up.

It was my belief that using VASA was going to solve this problem but I may be wrong. Am I missing something here or do I still need to blow away the lun and recreate it in order to gain that space back?

thanks,

Paul

HI Thanks for your reply.

I read that doc today but it refers to thin provisioned volumes. I am using thick provisioned volumes across the board (in both vmware and on the Equallogic). I do not know if VMWare knows that the blocks it used originally for vmware1 (which has now been moved/deleted) can be reallocated to a new vm (does vmware keep a log of blocks it has used and then deleted?).

I guess my question is, in my situation am I going to have to blow away this LUN to reclaim the space or is what I am seeing in the SAN GUI just a high watermark?

If I do have to move the vm's then I guess all i can say is it is pretty annoying. I faced this issue back in 2008 and its now 2012!!!

thanks for your answers on this.

Do you think this issue affects things like starwind as well?
