2005 Dell Inspiron 1000

My laptop available memory reads between 49 and 79MB. Is this normal considering the minimum memory is 256 and the max is 512 according to the manual?

It was running very slowly, so we took almost all programs off. It seems to be running at a better speed now. However, the memory readings puzzle me.

Thanks for any help!

If you right click on "My Computer" , select Properties and then select the Genera you will see what the physical memory your machine has available.  The Inspiron 1000 was designed to only have a max of 512Mb or RAM.  The avaiable memory you are referring to may be what it is currently available, but you do not say where you received that information.   If you do a CTRL ALT DEL and select Task Manager, and select the Performance tab, you can see memory metrics.
