5150 Memory Slot #2

After a period of intermittant system probs, have recently confirmed my 2'nd ram slot on inspiron 5150 is shot.  It won't recognize a variety of ram modules that work fine in slot 1.  Wanted to upgrade to 2GB ram for DVD transcoding...may be a problem.   Any tips to fix / replace or is a m-board change req'd.  If so, need to determine price  impact... FWIW computer is less than 2 yrs old, and runs very hot, far worse than my work issued IBM.

Thanks
JE

Hi, your message implies the slot failure could be some other source?  I only swapped good memory modules in/out to verify.  What else do you suggest?

Thanks,
JE

The only definitive test is to replace the suspect socket. If it works, great. If it doesn't, the fault is with the memory controller or another component on the mainboard.

Success rates for socket replacement are probably about 50:50.

Only a surface-mount repair shop has a shot at replacing the socket, if it is indeed the cause of the failure.

Otherwise, a replacement mainboard is the only option.
