Cant install windows xp or windows 7, and can I Bios update from dos? inspiron 1440

Just got this laptop it had a bad hard drive but Im thinking that it mite need a driver? I can get Fedora 14 to install fine

windows xp installs (with using a usb keyboard) but than freezes on the XP screen

windows 7 freezes before getting into the windows setup
