Dell Inspiron 1520 Touchpad buttons have stopped working

Dell Inspiron 1520

The touchpad buttons have stopped working while I can still use the touchpad for screen navigation as well as the vertical and horizontal scrolls are working correctly. I can even click by tapping on the touchpad.

The touchpad buttons had worked for few seconds in between but later have stopped working completely. I have tried re-installing the touchpad drivers. Also did a factory restore. But the issue sustains.

Not sure if its a software or a hardware issue. Please advice!

Try safe mode (F8 before Windows loads).  If the buttons work there, it's a driver problem.  If not, replace the palmrest.
