Dell Inspiron N5110 i5 windows 7 home

I have a Dell N5110 with a bad memory slot.  I took out the 4Gb that was in there.  Can I replace the other 4Gb with an 8 Gb and leave the bad slot empty?

Inspiron N5110 supports 4GB in each slot. I recommend replacing motherboard and using both the slots with 4 GB in each slot.
