Erratic Cursor...Trackpad???

I don't know if this is hardware related or not, but it's all I can come up with.  Out of nowhere the cursor on my Inspiron 9400 began moving very erratically.  I have the latest driver for the trackpad and I've even tried a reinstall of Windows.  I'm running XP.  Also, the keyboard is very hesitant to respond.  Could these be related?  Any help is appreciated!!!

Spastic cursor performance is usually because of background programs hogging the CPU. Check all the running programs and eliminate those not necessary. Monitor programs and CPU usage with the Task Manager.

I figured it out actually.  For some reason, when the battery on a Dell laptop completely dies, weird things happen.  I've found people who've had memory problems, video problems, and now mouse/keyboard problems.  Unplugging the battery helps everything.  Thanks for your help though!!
