Frequent crashes

Three weeks ago I jumped when UPS rang the doorbell.  I dropped my laptop on the living room carpeting.  I thought it was gone for good.   Does a wire pass from the key board up to the screen? I noticed when there is a gap where the right hinge on the cover and bottom of the computer meet  the unit  goes out.  I have to wiggle or open and close the unit so the hinge looks normal and hope the unit restarts.  It has been working.  I bought the unit in 1995 and still have windows 2000 as the operating system.  I can no longer work due to a disability.  I am worried if the latitude  is broke and could be repaired or if  the screen  is just on the last flicker.
