Hello Jake,
Dell Inspiron 14R (SE) is shipped with one SATA-2 Hard Disk Drive. Following table has the list of the supported hard drives for the system. It does not have an additional slot to install a secondary hard drive.
Dell Inspiron14R (SE) is also shipped with an optional mSATA solid-state drive. mSATA drive occupies very less space. Inspiron 7420/14R (SE) is shipped with mSATA drives with capacity of 32 GB which is used for the cache memory.

hi,
hijacking this thread to ask a few questions.
Does the inspiron 7420 support an upgrade to an ssd?
will it void my warranty if i upgrade?

Hi hellpiggy,
The hard drive is replaceable by SSD. SSD's are available in SATA II and SATA III standards. You may purchase and install a SATA II SSD on computer in place of regular hard drive. Even SATA III SSD should work. However, it would operate on SATA II speed. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts.
You may find detailed steps on installing hard drive on your computer from link:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt_inspiron_laptop/inspiron-14r-se-7420_Owner%27s%20Manual_en-us.pdf
Copy and paste the link in address bar of browser and hit Enter. Ensure to follow the safety instructions in manual.
Do reply in case you have any further questions. I'll be glad to assist.

My question is: I own a Dell Insprion 14R (n4010) and wondering if I can, through the esata port, connect a sata III, a Crucial (CT128M4SSD2)128GB solid state drive with an appropriate cable. Thanks for your help. David
