Inspiron 17R SE 7720 and Corsair CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9.Compatible?

Hi Guys i have the Dell Inspiron 17R SE (7720),came with 4 gigs of ram.I want to remove this and

I want to put Corsair CMSX8GX3M2A1600C9 1600mhz C9 ram in it (2 times 4gb ( 8gb Total).

On Corsair support website it says this memory will run at full speed (1600mhz) with 2nd and 3rd gen i5.

My 7720 has 3rd gen,it also states it will run at 1333 mhz spd if no overclocking options are available in bios.

My question is, will the 7720 read XMP profiles on the Corsair to run at 1600mhz and not the spd 1333mhz?

Can i run this memory at 1600mhz??

Please help

Regards

Duncan

Hi,

Dell Insiron 17R SE (7720) has not been tested with Extreme Memory Profile.

For some information on compatibility you can visit  http://intel.ly/NaWcpk

Yes A11

Yes checked with built in mem check

bounce between win 8 and 7 w/ no problems detected.

Not officially sanctioned, don't try at home

Only professionals can hack or make anything work

Oh we know the drill...

Hi Duncan,

Would like to inform you that Dell Inspiron 17R SE (7720) is most certainly compatible to work at 1600 MHz memory speed with Ivy Bridge Processors and it can work with maximum 8 GB memory.

Please keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks & Regards

Many thanks for reply and confirmation.

Can you confirm if the 7720 can read XMP profile memory please?

Many Thanks

Just to let Dell and the Community know the Corsair worked perfectly at the specified timings,9-9-9-24 at 1600mhz.

And whats even better it runs at 1T command too!!

Laptop is noticeably faster.

Really chuffed with my Dell purchase.

Thanks to support.

I have a 7720 3630 QM with installed 16GB corsair cmsx16gx3m2a1600c10 working well in spite of nay-saying dell/corsair web site.

Ignorance is blissful, I suppose.

Good thing I did not research before I ordered the memory upgrade, else I would still be at 8gb (gasp).

Next I'm gonna install a 64gb mSATA and use it.

(Blissfully ignorant again).

Wow thats incredible, its not officially supported by Dell but in certain circumstances and certain memory itll work, thats why i guess its not officially supported.

The information you gave could prove very usefull to other 7720 owners, you took the plunge and it paid of!!

Well Done.

PS Could you tell me if you have tested for stability using memtest-86 etc. And test with Prime95 etc.

If youve tested it and its stable thats great news.

Also please post bios revision (Latest is A11)

Regards

Duncan

I wanted to add my two cents worth-

I have a Dell 17R-7720 3610 QM (Intel i-7) that originally came with 8gb of ram. I read these posts and 'googled' a few sites looking for Corsair Vengeance 8gb (1x8GB) DDR3 1600 Mhz (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory (CMS8XGX3M1A1600C10) memory and found it advertised on Amazon for $47.51 a stick (bought 2 for 16gb).

I realized using this I could be voiding my warranty- but I also know that the Ivy Bridge (3rd Gen Intel Processor) can certainly address this memory and will definitely address 1600Mhz (PC3 12800) memory. I'm not buying that a Motherboard failure will occur- so I took a look at great site that describes how to remove the memory cover from the bottom of the machine.

I attached an anti-static strap to my wrist, removed the battery, and glanced at the light green 4GB stock memory cards. The Corsair Vengeance chips are gold colored and have heat shields running across the chips (you want to handle the cards by their edges to be safe with a static strap on your wrist). Once the old ones were out- I popped the new ones in and glanced at the empty MSATA slot (I'll be saving for something to add to that). I got the cover back in place and the 2 captive Philips screws back in, battery back in, and plugged the A/C adapter back in.

I always use this machine on a Laptop Cooling Tray- so maybe I won't suffer a Motherboard failure from heat!

The machine happily reports 16gb of ram (15.9 usable).

I've used it with Photoshop CS6, Oblivion and Crysis and it hasn't missed a beat (the games run okay with the 2gb nVidia GeForce 670M).

Hope this helps you guys out!

Hi, i have bought Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720, update latest bios A11. I wanted to have major upgrade by installing two 1x8GB Vengeance CMSX8GX3M1A1600C10 , add mSata 32GB for caching, Corsair Neutron Series GTX SSD as primary, 1TB 7200rpm HDD for storage. I wonder if the system could work or not?

why would you want to cache an SSD?

my plan is 256Gb mSATA as boot and 2 1Tb HDD's one for data and the second as a backup of my data.

my 2x8Gb vengeance ram will be arriving this week so i will let you know how that goes.

Don't think you can boot from or use mSATA  as a memory cache if you have a reinstall partition on your hard drive.  Please post results if you are able to use the mSATA.

not sure about the memory cache bit but others are booting from their mSATA cards, do a search for 7720 and you will find thee threads talking about it
