Inspiron 3147 replacing 2gb RAM
I put the crucial 8gb in my Inspiron 3147 replacing 2gb RAM. It only recognizes 4gb. How are you getting it to recognize 8gb?

+1 the SSD sentiment. Make sure you get a 6Gb/s drive, not an older 3Gb/s drive.

How do you change the hard drive to solid state? if I can not clone the old due to not having a cd drive?

I'd suggest a couple of things. Make sure that you have the right voltage version of the RAM stick. Re-read previous posts until you find the exact model number recommended that worked for the rest of us. Contact Crucial and return the stick as defective, or perhaps there is a problem with the computer. None of us have done anything special to make the 8GB RAM work - just popped it in and seated it securely.
Good luck,
