Letter faded on my keyboard

Hello everyone! I have been searching the forums seeking this discussion----"letters faded on my keyboard" curious to see if this was common and answered. DELL Inspiron--does it matter much on locating a keyboard that is compatible as I start my search? I do recall my keyboards in the past that dd not have this "Painted on look" regarding the letters. They appeared to be more embedded into the keys.
