Windows Aero on NVIDIA Optimus?

Hi there,

I've got a Dell XPS L502X and I'm having problems with Windows Aero enabled and the Integrated Graphics driver crashing and reloading.

I've configured the laptop to run everything on the NVIDIA graphics in the Global section, and the issue seems to happen when using AutoCAD 2012 LT (which has been configured to run on the NVIDIA card in the individual applications section as well).

I can't seem to force "dwm.exe" (which I believe is responsible for Aero) to use the NVIDIA card; has anyone got any ideas?

I'm using the drivers available from the Dell website, although I've noticed that NVIDIA have a later version out, so I'm going to try that.

I've looked in the BIOS and can't seem to find any options to switch Optimus on or off.

Has anyone else experienced similar problems; or managed to force absolutely EVERYTHING to run on the NVIDIA card?

I'm not concerned with battery power, this is essentially a desktop replacement machine anyway.

Thanks,

Owen

For the time being there is no way to disable Optimus from the system.  It looks like you have done the most that you can by configuring the Nvidia card to be the default GPU Globally.

This seems to be an Nvidia wide issue with AutoCad and Optimus

I don't know if there are plans any time in the near future to put in an option to disable Optimus in the bios, but if I hear of one I will certainly post on the notebook forums.

AutoCad and Maya and other 3D apps use Quadro GPU's or FireGL GPUs not Geforce or Radeon.

The Cad Drivers and Hardware are different.  There are no NVIDIA Geforce cards Certified to run.

Autodesk certification testing focuses on workstation-grade graphics hardware, as identified by the hardware vendor. Testing and designation as Certified or Recommended does not guarantee that a particular device is workstation-grade or that it will meet a user's particular needs. Test results are valid only for the tested combination of graphics hardware and driver. Certified or Recommended status does not guarantee that the graphics hardware will perform acceptably with other drivers.

Hi everyone,

I think we've got a bit side-tracked and maybe I wasn't clear enough...

AutoCAD works absolutely fine, so long as Windows Aero is off (i.e. the "Windows 7 Basic" theme is used in "Personalize".)

This is not acceptable for the end-user, and I'm trying to find a way to force AERO (and not AutoCAD) to use the NVIDIA graphics.

So far I have tried the following:

Set the Global setting to the NVIDIA card

Set AutoCAD's .exe file to use the NVIDIA card

Set Windows Explorer to use the NVIDIA card

When I try forcing DWM.exe to use the NVIDIA card the option is greyed out and unavailable.

Has anyone got any ideas on how I might be able to force AERO to use the NVIDIA graphics card?

Thanks,

Owen

Depending on the App. you use,Windows AERO is turned off by the GPU hardware itself because it does not function with the hardware drivers. Most cases AERO stays on unless the hardware itself turns it off.I know it works that way with my GPU and certain Apps. i use.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean dgkpcon.  Would you mind re-explaining please?

Sid

I just updated my post on Optimus.

en.community.dell.com/.../19405027.aspx

There is a Optimus FAQ from Nvidia that may be of some help for you.

nvidia.custhelp.com/.../1

Dell has just recently posted an article on configuring Optimus that may have some info that you may not have been aware of.

Again, if there are any plans of a future BIOS update to allow users to disable Optimus I will report here.
