Windows 10 cumulative updates renaming computer

So far I can't rind definitive proof, but we are having an issue with computers renaming themselves to WIN10- after running Windows 10 cumulative updates. 1703, 1709, 1803 etc. It doesn't seem to happen to computers were we installed Windows 10 from scratch. The only common denominator I can see is that these machines were imaged using Dell Image assist. Anyone else experience this problem? I was thinking maybe it had something to do with Sysprep since these updates seem to take the place of future versions of Windows.

Hello Joe,

The company I support had the same issue when we used Windows Provisioning. To fix this problem we had to do two things:

  1. Rename the folder named "C:\Windows\Provisioning" (To something else, ex. Provisioning.old)
  2. Delete the folder named "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Provisioning"

To make it easier, we made a startup/shutdown script and deployed it via group policy to do these two things on any Windows 10 machine. I hope that this helps you!

Thanks,
Daniel
