Inspiron 3650, No Power
Hi folks,
I can't get my Dell Inspiron 3650 mini-tower to power on. No light, no fan motor. I tried replacing the power cable and plugging directly into the wall, but no luck.
I have not installed any new hardware or software lately.
Both Windows 10 and Dell Updates are current as of October 5, 2019.
I tried holding the power button for 30 seconds, nada.
I am not sure if the machine had been on earlier and went into sleep mode or if it just wouldn't start from scratch.
I will be grateful for any help you can give.

Just a short comment on buying a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply). I have used them for quite a number of years and they have saved my system from power surges and power losses more than once. Absolutely one of the best forms of insurance you can buy to ensure your systems safety. There are many good makes and one of the following sites can help you calculate the size you need.

Is the power supply LED on rear of PC, below the power cord socket, on or off?
Read Dell's How to Troubleshoot a No Power Issue
Your PSU has a BIST button next to the PSU LED on the rear of the PC, so be sure to read and follow section 7-iv in that article.

3650 uses tiny power supply and its not upgradeable inside the unit.
You need to buy an external power supply and MODDIY adapter.

https://www.moddiy.com/products/Dell-Inspiron-3650-PSU-Main-Power-24-Pin-to-8-Pin-Adapter-Cable-30cm.html
There is also a guy who made his own adapter from scratch.
https://raphtec.wordpress.com/projects/dell-poweredge-t20-atx-power-supply-adapter/
The fix is ugly but it works fine.
There is a specific GTX 1060 that Fits and works.
EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC GAMING, ACX 2.0 (Single Fan), 06G-P4-6163-KR,
6GB GDDR5, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC), Only 6.8 Inches

HOWEVER you need to hack the power supply as the stock unit is too tiny and too small. The 4 pin ATX power connection is fine but the 24 Pin needs an adapter to 8 pins. Recommended power supply is also very specific.EVGA SuperNOVA 750 B1, 80+ BRONZE 750W, 110-B1-0750-VR
The B1 works fine. B2 BQ G2 GS etc DOES NOT WORK. You have to remove the stock unit and leave the new unit OUTSIDE The case because it physically does not fit inside. Secure Boot must be OFF and Legacy CSM on.

Hi folks,
Thanks RoHe and speedstep for your siggestions.
RoHe's post was helpful, made it possible to definitely narrow the problem down to the power supply.
Speedstep's might have been useful if I were more tech savvy and ready to spend time on hardware fixes.
However, the technician at the shop where I took my 3650 said that, due to the specific type of connector used for the power supply, implementing workarounds might create new problems.
The power supply was replaced and the unit is working fine again.
The tech told me that he has seen many 3650s with power supply problems, usually caused by overcurrents or undercurrents in the house AC. He advised me to buy an uninterruptable external power supply, which I did.
I have been using Dell computers since 1997 and have never had a power supply failure before. For my next purchase I will be sure to check on the repair records of the various models on offer.
