Inspiron 3650, upgrade my HD to SSD?
I'd like to upgrade my HD to a SSD. A few questions. My current drive is listed as type "3". I'm trying to figure out what size SSD I need and what version of SATA I have (does the "3" refer to SATA lll?) Also, it seems that 2.5" SSDs are far more common than 3.5". Will I need to purchase some sort of new bracket or insert to install a 2.5" in the Inspiron or should I only look for a 3.5": SSD? Thanks.

3650 has both 3.5 and 2.5 inch bays.

So will I be able to install a 2.5" SSD and leave the existing HD in place as a backup? If that's the case, will I need to order a cable along with the SSD?

Yes you will need a data cable and a 3.5" SSD doesn't exist. You can leave the 3.5" SATA spinning drive in there. Most people just have a SSD to boot to and keep their most used data on it. A light user can get by with a 128gb ssd and might need a 250gb.You can use the SATA 3.5" to store things on. Yes type 3 is SATA III, the best spinning HDD. The 2.5" bay is in the swing-out section with the 3.5 bay and probably doesn't have a data cable for it.

The other Gotcha is that Caddies and cables do not seem to be included.

There is only 1 BAY for 3.5 item #1 and there are 2 bays for 2.5 item #2
You also need y CABLE for power for sata as there is only 1.
The extra data and power cables are NOT included.

The bracket you need and power cable are shown in speedstep's post above. Here is a link to the data cable https://www.amazon.com/Benfei-Straight-Locking-Compatible-Driver/dp/B07DRF1XDC/ref=sr_1_9?keywords=sata+3+data+cable&qid=1553222720&s=electronics&sr=1-9. There is also a similar cable but with a right angle connector on one end. Look at where you will mount the 2.5 inch drive and try to determine whether the straight connector or right angle connector would work best. So you will have a power cable connecting between the 6-pin power socket on the motherboard and the ssd drive, as well as a data cable going from the SATA data port on the motherboard to your drive. Check the distance between these sockets and where they will connect to the drive. If the standard cable is too short or too long, you should be able to find one in a shorter or longer length. Good luck!

I don't like the ones with latching locks, they just make it harder to work on.

Hi,
I know this is an old thread however I'm attempting to do the same upgrade with windows 10 on an SSD and it keeps crashing while reading the usb. Did you have to make any bios changes to install the OS on your ssd?
Thanks
