Inspiron 580 MT, upgrading ram and SSD?
Hello,
I have got the following desktop computer :
Dell Inspiron 580 MT : Intel Core i5 Processor 760 (2,80GHz,8Mo)
The motherboard is as follows :
Dell Inc. Product OC2KJT Version A00
- Ram : 6 Go (3 x 2Go of DDR3 1333)
The original Ram bars are as follows :
- as seen on the original Ram bars : 2GB 2Rx8 10600U 9-10 BD HMT125U6TFR8C H9 NO AA 1053 HYNIX KOREA
- as given on the Dell website when I enter the pc serial number : P223C, 3DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE, 2G, 1333, 128X64, 8, 240, 2RX8
I have in total 4 slots for Ram bars.
Dell told me that such computer can accept up to 8Go memory.
I am planning to upgrade my computer by adding Ram and SSD.
But unfortunately, I have no hardware skill.
On the crucial web site, I found the following components :
- https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/inspiron-580/CT2354791 : Crucial 2GB DDR3L-1600 UDIMM
- https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/inspiron-580/CT11488840 : Crucial MX500 1TB SATA 2.5" 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD
Would you have any specific advice or recommendation before I order the components and start the upgrade ?
I thank you in advance for any reply.

Crucial memory is what we usually recommend for non Dell branded memory. It is guaranteed to work in a Dell, some other brands are iffy. However, you must have a 64 bit OS or memory over 4GB will not be used and wasted. Be careful with memory as it is static sensitive. Only handle memory by the edges and never touch the components or printed circuitry.
I don't have any info on Crucial SSD's. I and many techies I know use Samsung EVO 850/860 SSD's.
There are two methods to move to the SSD.
1. Clone the hard drive, ALL PARTITIONS, to the new SSD. However a clone also copies all bad sectors and data on the old drive to the new drive.
2. Create a disc image, ALL PARTITIONS, to an external drive. Then restore the disc image to the new SSD. This requires an extra drive, but you should have been doing this (backup) anyway. This is actually the best method as a clone is "hit or miss" - works for most but not all and as noted does not copy the bad data to the new drive.
The free (and popular) Macrium Reflect disc image and clone program is recommended.

Hello,
I thank you for your replies.
1- I bought the following Ram :
Crucial CT25664BD160B 2Go (DDR3L, 1600 MT/s, PC3L-12800, DIMM, 240-Pin)
I put it in the empty slot. And it works !
2- I bought the following SSD :
Samsung SSD Interne 860 EVO 2.5" (1 To) - MZ-76E1T0B/EU
When the computer is opened, I can find a free black plug for power connection to the SSD
Together with this black plug is the white plug, but it seems that it is not suited for Sata connexion to the SSD.
Is there any free Sata cable on the Inspiron 580 MT computer ?
Or, do I need to also buy a Sata cable to link the mother board with the SSD ?
Is the here below cable suited for my computer and SSD :
https://www.amazon.fr/Poppstar-C%C3%A2ble-donn%C3%A9es-jusqu%C3%A0-Longueur/dp/B01MSAEH7I/ref=sr_1_14?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1547811283&sr=1-14&keywords=sata+carte+m%C3%A8re
3- Do I also need to buy a SSD rack ?
Or is there already a place suited to fix the SSD in the Inspiron 580 MT computer ?
As this one for instance :
https://www.amazon.fr/SALCAR-Ch%C3%A2ssis-Montage-Adaptateur-Porte-Caddy/dp/B01IEIPRB6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1547811573&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=Rack+SSD&psc=1
I thank you very much in advance for your replied (to a newbee in hardware)

I don't know what type of connector is in your 580, but my Dell Inspiron 15 laptop came with an M.2 SSD and space for either a laptop hard drive or a full size SSD. I installed a Samsung EVO 850 SSD and the combination power/SATA Data connector mated with the SSD drive perfectly.
Power/SATA Data connections are standardized between a hard drive, optical drive and SSD from what I see in my Desktop drive connections and the mentioned laptop connection.

Most SSDs are 2.5".
Your Inspiron 580's hard drive is probably 3.5".
You will need a bracket to adapt the 2.5" to 3.5"
this post https://www.dell.com/community/Desktops-General-Read-Only/Adding-SSD-to-Inspiron-580-Desktop-and-installing-windows-on-it/td-p/3984460 mentions 3 power cables

Why not save the money for a new computer instead of upgrading an old computer?
