Inspiron 580 ST, installing additional memory

My March 2011 Inspiron 580 ST Base has 2x2GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM. Would adding additional memory help in dealing with a gradual slow down noticed over the years?

A complete re-installation of the 2011 operating system will speed things up. Adding 4GB memory would also help. Both the Inspiron 580 MT and ST use the same OEM memory.
* 8GB is the maximum supported
* Four slots, DDR3, 1066MHz or 1333MHz, Unbuffered, Non-ECC, 1.5v, 240 pin

This may seem off-topic, but after the last post, as I was shutting down the computer, I heard a loud pop at the back of the computer and a burning smell emanated from the Central unit. The APC UPS led turned red and the computer switched off.

I am now searching the Dell web site for a replacement for the Bestec TFX0250P5W power supply originally installed on the desktop. Advice on the memory will come in handy in case it needs to be replaced as well. Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you.

I don’t have the 2011 OS anymore. It was upgraded to Windows 10 online. Please advise if the BIOS needs to be upgraded.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice.

I have Windows 10 Home on my 580 ST.

Thank you.

But those models are currently not available where I am. I had to make do with an indigenous make obtained from the local market. I’ll try to get it replaced as soon as it is possible to get hold of one of Power Supplies listed by you.

BIOS does not need an upgrade.  Reinstall on a new motherboard however will not be activated.  There were ZERO upgrades from XP or Vista to 8 or 10.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

Luckily, the motherboard appears to have survived the power supply failure.

My Inspiron 580 ST had come with Windows 7 Home Basic which was upgraded to Windows 10 Home.
