Inspiron 620, i5-2400, temperature in games

I just installed an i5-2400 CPU for my Inspiron 620 mini-tower. It works well when browsing and playing low-specs games, but Minecraft causes the CPU temperature to rise to around 85 degrees Celsius. Would I be able to replace the stock CPU fan with a better one and if so, what would you recommend? I'm worried about my CPU overheating while I'm playing Minecraft.

You apply thermal paste only during clean install. First wipe off all old paste from cpu using lint free tissue moistened w rubbing alcohol. Apply a small rice grain sized paste in center of cpu, no need to apply to new heatsink surface, install in one move by mounting and tightening 4 screws in diagonal sequence. Do not loosen heatsink during this procedure.  Stock cooling fan only gives very basic cooling and only good for cpu at idle. The Rosewill cooler is just one example. There are other good aftermarket air coolers. Just make sure they are not too tall.

You can consider switching to Rosewill RCX-Z300 CPU Ball Cooler.  You can also clean and apply new thermal paste to cpu/heatsink. The case has only one 80 mm rear chassis fan. You can consider adding a front intake fan to increase front to back air flow.

the 620 case is a mini tower and may not accommodate full height tower air cooler such as the popular Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo.

So the RCX-Z300 will provide better cooling than my stock fan? I'll have to get it then. Is the thermal paste okay to apply if the CPU has been sitting in there running or is it best to apply it when it's initially installed?

I replaced the stock chassis fan with a Noctua NF-89 PWM Cooling Fan.  $16.  It helped ventilate the entire computer including video card.

What video card are you using?

@lambdapro2 I'm using the 1050 Ti. It runs well and I haven't had any issues with it overheating. The hottest I've seen it get is around 55 degrees Celsius.

So you have 16 GB of RAM on your Inspiron 620? I thought the common consensus was that you couldn't have more than 8?

@redxps630 I just got the Rosewill cooler. Unfortunately, I'm having a lot of trouble installing it. Even when I align the 4 pins, they won't go down and lock in place.

@Lonsol I am sorry to hear that.  I just realize the RCX-Z300 CPU Ball Cooler uses snap on pin similar to Intel stock cooler for LGA1155.  https://www.rosewill.com/product/rosewill-rcx-z300-92mm-cpu-cooler-fan-ball-bearing/#iLightbox[product-gallery]/3

Is your original cooler mounted with screws?  If yes, you will need to use air cooler that has screwed on pins.

I am sorry I did not realize this technical hurdle earlier.  I saw someone upgraded an inspiron 620 with the Rosewill cooler and assumed it was an easy swap.

@redxps630 My stock cooler uses screws. I'll look for another fan.

Inspiron 620 MT spec physical dimensions Width 182.80 mm (7.20 inches)

the motherboard is less than 1 cm above mounting tray.

You should be able to mount a 6.2 inch tall air cooler in this case, but do measure w a home made cube that is 6.2 inch tall to verify you can close case cover.

whatever cooler you get make sure it has a copper cold plate and high TDP in spec. Aluminum cold plate is for low TDP only. The popular cooler master hyper 212 evo is 6.2” tall w mostly copper plate.  max TDP is 180W.  http://us.coolermaster.com/product/Detail/cooling/lga-1155/hyper-212-evo.html

@redxps630 Ended up going with the Cooler Master i70. It installed relatively easily and runs great. CPU temperature during Minecraft dropped from 80 degrees Celsius all the way down to 45.
