Inspiron 7459, Bios update

Somehow my i7 motherboard died. My strong suspicion is that a BIOS update went seriously wrong. Anyhow I have replaced it with an i5-6300HQ (2.30GHz, 12GB). My brick is alive again. The Dell SupportAssist now suggests I need an update to my BIOS to Inspiron-7459_1.8.0.EXE. It also states URGENT. Given that a previous BIOS update may have fried my system, is this a wise and safe update to implement? What if I don't?

Any advice most appreciated.

Aughlin,

The bios update for your computer fixes the information below.

Fixes & Enhancements

Fixes:
- Updated Intel ME Firmware to address security advisory INTEL-SA-00118(CVE-2018-3627)
- Updated CPU microcode to address security advisory Intel Security Advisory INTEL-SA-00115 (CVE-2018-3639 & CVE-2018-3640)
You may want to update the bios for this security fix.

Thank you so much.  I'm really worried about getting this wrong as I know little about such things.  (I haven't done it yet). The Dell Update v3 now says I should install/implement  SWB, BIOS, INSP 7459, POPPY, A02.

Is this the same thing?  Because I have changed motherboard from i7 to i5... can I trust SupportAssist or DellUpdate to know of the change and suggest appropriately?

Thanks again.

Just adding my thoughts. I have never heard of a failed BIOS update breaking a CPU. Breaking the motherboard CMOS, yes, but not the CPU itself. If the PC is currently working, I would not install the BIOS update. Understand that no "real world" exploits of these Meltdown/Spectre vulnerabilities have been reported to date. Researchers have only produced proof of concepts.
