Actual ram 16GB; available ram 10.4GB: why?

On my Dell Inspiron 15-7568 laptop running Windows 10 Home Edition I installed 16.0 GB of RAM and yet available RAM is only 10.4 GB.

Why don't I get 15.9 GB of available RAM ?

Check out this thread on the Windows 10 forum sound like your issue is the same

That sounds pretty odd.  The system can function with as little as 4GB total ram leaving somewhere about 3.4GB ram usable.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'm coming to think that "available ram 10.4GB" actually means currently unused RAM.

Maybe this is all semantic.  Maybe "available RAM" means unused RAM.  So that the system is using 5.6GB RAM.

Hi boblite44,

I don't believe that interpretation is correct. I actually think clintlgm might be onto something with his link to the other forum; there may be something with the RAM or RAM slots that Windows isn't reading correctly. Have you run the Dell diagnostics? Is this the original RAM from Dell or is it 3rd party you installed? If you reduce the RAM to 8GB, what does it show for available? Does it report the same usage in each slot or does it change with which RAM slots are used? Feel free to troubleshoot all that & let us know what you find, if you're up for it. At least what the Dell diagnostics say.

I'd like to ask you to check on something else, if you're willing. Open the Task Manager, then click on "More Details" in the bottom left (if it's not already in the more detail view), now click the "Performance" tab. Below the large graph you should see a split bar that is labeled "Memory Composition." What are the values listed there?

Let us know what you find.
