Battery Design Capacity vs Full Charge Capacity

I noticed my battery on my Inspiron 7373 doesn't last as long as I think it should.  After 3 months the full charge capacity is only 27,337 and it should be 37,996.  Is this normal or is the battery failing after 3 months?

Thank you for your message. This is working as designed, a Lithium battery loses capacity constantly & this happens at a higher rate in the initial few months.

The normal lifespan of a lithium battery is 18-24 months, considering this the battery is performing as designed.

You can check the Dell battery FAQ here

Battery health lost 30% in 3 months and this you think is expected?

Something is very wrong with Dell. Very very wrong.

Hello,

At work, we often use Lenovo Thinkpad laptops. They have a procedure for re-calibrating the battery (by letting it discharge fully and then charging it back) and the battery regains quite all of it's capacity. I do not know what they do exactly on the battery controller or battery itself.

We often keep our laptops for many years (it is a PITA to change them as we have a lot of software/configuration on them) and we never see a failing battery. So maybe Dell could investigate a little further on this issue ? Just my 2¢

Now I'm down to 24,419

My Laptop battery died within the year, dell changed it, the new battery was replaced and in less than 3 months it's at 70% capacity. I am not sure if every dell laptop has this problem or this model is special

This is what I've found out. When battery is near 20% and you reboot or shut down then battery health degrades. If you let battery to get full and then discarged it till 0% (you have to let pc shut down itself) when you power on again battery health restores. Maybe it is a "calculating" bug ? Very annoying , though.

@ aniesshsethh,

What is the status of the AC adapter & battery in BIOS? What is the system model in question here?

Are you using a Dell application or any 3rd party application to check the battery charge?

Thank you for the reply, here you go https://photos.app.goo.gl/fzfUuQTPiGPuYQfd7 BIOS is showing 60% capacity, and the battery was replaced I think in december.

I wonder if the Windows update in the middle of the night might be the culprit?

I guess all of you are aware that on Windows  Auto-Update the computer typically comes on in the (not normal usage hours) and looks for a connection to update, which it might do if it finds a connection.  A danger in that it will not only use up battery, but overheat in the bag.

It finally showed that it was at the end of its life (less than a year so still under warranty) so dell sent me a new one.  It now shows ~38,000 max and the charge capacity of ~30,000 right out of the box...ugh

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 3583 and within 2 days the full charge capacity dropped 940 mWh is that normal?

Design Capacity is 41998 mWh and Full charge capacity is 41051 mWh.

I have an Inspiron 13 7000,

The values for the Full Charge Capacity vary up and down A LOT! I thought they were supposed to go down only, but mine jumped from 23,214 mWh to 36,092 mW to 37,267mW. Now is at 17,852 mWh!
