Dell inspiron 5570 - Cant boot after a SATA 2.5 1tb samsung evo

Hello,

i tried to upgrade my dell inspiron 5570  by adding a SATA 2.5 1tb SSD on my empth HDD slot. The laptop came with a 256 M2 SSD drive and its where all files and windows were installed.

After the installation of the hard drive no boot option is avalaible when i turn it on and there are no boot devices under the boot sequence option.

I ran the short and long hardware diagnostics and no issues were found. I can see the hard drive but I am not sure I can find the M2 anymore.

I will try to boot through a USB now, but if you have any suggestions they are more than welcome.

I just realized now, maybe the 1tb is too much for my configuration?

Thank you very much in advance

The 1 TB drive should be fine. It sounds like the 1 TB drive is now the first boot device in the BIOS. Have you accessed the BIOS to make sure that Windows Boot Manager is first in the list? Restart the system and at the Dell splash screen start tapping F2. Once you are in the BIOS check the boot sequence. I am assuming you made no changes in the BIOS?

Hello,

thanks a lot for your answer. I am attaching the photos of my boot menu. I believe it cant see the M2.

Sata operation is set to AHCI, secure boot is disabled, UEFI boot path security is set to always, except intermal hdd.

Thank you once more,

Ioanna

Just a small update.

I installed windows on the new SSD Pro and I can't find my old ssd anywhere. I took the new SSD out and still cant find my old SSD anywhere not with ubuntu usb boot not with anything.

I believe my old SSD is not an M2 but rather a motherboard SSD of 256 Gb. Do you know where it is located?

To get this information you need to log on to support, enter your model number and most importantly Enter your Service Tag Number.

That will open all the hardware information on your Particular notebook, You should download and read your Service Manual there you will find out how to open your notebook and will show you where all your hard drive/SSD slots are and what they can be upgraded to.

Hello,

thank you for the advice.

My first drive was a 256GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive CT1PW. I can't find in the service manual where it is located inside my Inspiron 5570. It doesn't also say how it can be upgraded.

I believe it's some kind of incompatibility or a misconecction on the hardware. I really hope I didnt kill it because even when I took the new SATA off it didn't see it.

Thank you for the support everybody

Page 19 shows you where your m.2 slot is Page 21 shows you the hard drive. Page 89 shows you that the m.2 slot can be SATA or PCIe Since you report that you currently have an NVME 256GB running in that slot you know that your slot is set up for NVME https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/inspiron-15-5570-laptop_service-manual_en-us.pdf

This link explains PCIe and NVME 6th paragraph down. https://www.microcontrollertips.com/why-nvme-ssds-are-faster-than-sata-ssds/

As I said earlier i think your issue is caused because of the RAID controller being the default for Dell and in order to see you hard drivers /SSD you have to install the IRST driver before you can see them.

This is why I suggested that you clone rather than clean install to your new SSD you may need a USB 3.1  to m.2 NVME external case or adapter to accomplish this. By Cloning, you copy all files currently on your OS SSD/Hard drive to your new SSD that way it will boot the first time. After cloning if you want a fresh window all you have to do is download the latest ISO or let MCT create an install media, Really all you need to do is download the ISO to your desktop right click and install. Be sure to save your files and folder this will save all data and programs and most settings.

If your having a hard time grasping these concepts you should have a local computer shop accomplish this for you.
