G3 15 3579 supported M.2 form factor

Hi, I would like to install a new M.2 2280 NVMe drive, I see that some drives are 6,1mm thick (i.e. XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro) and some are 8mm thick (i.e XPG SPECTRIX S40G RGB). What thickness range is supported for a M.2 2280 drive in the G3 15 3579 ? It´s not specified in the service manual.

To answer my own question: I purchased the XPG GAMMIX S11 Pro (6.1mm thick) and worked fine. Dell support told me that "The SSD compatible are 7mm & 8mm".

The thickness is industry-standard what you need to know from your Service Manual is do you  have a 2280 Slot or just a 2230 slot, and then is this slot NVME or SATA With that information you can decide on what SSD will work in your notebook

Thank you for your help! The service manual says "M.2 2280 NVMe", I found that depending on the brand and model of the NVMe, the thickness of the drive varies. Some are 6mm, others 8mm (some have a heat sink, some not)

I fear to buy the 8mm thick and then find that it not properly fit in case.

The connector is an industry-standard 2280 Any Samsung SSD M.2 NVME  will fit. the 970 works fine in my notebook. I believe when Samsung first came out they did have some issues with some computer however a firmware update I believe has solved that issue; I at least haven't seen the problem on any of the several Forum that I participate in for several months. The 960 were good but expensive and slower than the 970. I can't speak for any other brand of M.2 well one the one that came with this notebook it was and is very slow compared to a 950, 960 or 970 only about 2x as fast as a 2.5" SATA SSD. I moved it to storage and put the 970 which is about 5 X faster. I've looked at the WD M.2 NVME and there slow also don't have any experience with any other brands except or a few failures and incompatibilities. Some people like the off brands for the cheaper prices and can live with the slower speeds.

Hi! I have question. I want to add SSD to my G3 too. However, manual talk about SSD shield, which I don't have as only HDD was installed. Do you have it or have you installed SSD without it? Thank you

All you should need it a 2x3mm screw if you have an open 2280 M.2 Slot, then you need to know if its SATA or NVME.

your Service Manual will have that information.
