Inspiron 15-5580, SSD compatibility

I have ordered an Inspiron 15 5580, which will come with one SATA III hard drive. I will wish to add a SSD, using the M.2 slot, and to dual boot - Linux Mint from the new SSD or the installed Windows 10 from the HDD.

The Setup Guide shows that the M.2 slot supports PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe. Does it alternatively support a PCIe Gen3 x2 NVMe, or an M.2 SATA III?  Would it be better for setting up dual booting if the SSD was SATA III like the HDD?  I realize the speed might be less with anything other than x4 NVMe, but I'm not too bothered about that, given the use of the machine, Straightforward setup is very important, and the cost saving would be a nice bonus.

Thanks - and apologies if this post appears twice,as I tried to post before I registered.

The Inspiron 15-5580 has one M.2 2230/2280 slot reserved for SSD. The other M.2 slot is reserved for the WiFi/BT combo card.

Unknown about NVME PCIe Gen3 x2 because we never tested them. Yes, the slot can use 256GB SATA3 M.2.

The Inspiron 15-5580 supports the following SSD types =
512GB NVMe, M.2, PCIe-32, Gen3 x4, 22mm/30mm/2.38mm
512GB NVMe, M.2, PCIe-34, Gen3 x4, 22mm/80mm/1.50mm
512GB NVMe, M.2, PCIe-34, Gen3 x4, 22mm/80mm/2.23mm
512GB NVMe, M.2, PCIe-34, Gen3 x4, 22mm/80mm/2.15mm

256GB SATA3, M.2, 22mm/30mm/2.38mm
256GB SATA3, M.2, 22mm/30mm/1.50mm

Thank you, Chris.

I am still quite puzzled.

"Yes, the slot can use 256GB SATA3 M.2."

Is that up to 256GB, or exactly 256GB, so not the more common 250GB or 240GB?

Similarly, are the 512GB figures for NVMe M.2 maxima, minima, or exactly?

I also asked whether adding an NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD to a SATA III HDD was recommended, or whether I should stay with SATA III for both?

Thanks

If I may interject here...this from the specs in the Dell manual.

One 2.5-inch hard drive
SATA (5400 RPM)
Up to 2 TB
One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe, up to 32 Gbps
Up to 512 GB

As stated, up to 512 GB on the M.2 SSD. And you don't have to stay SATA III with both. I have an Inspiron 5575 and have a 256 GB NVME M.2 SSD drive and a 500 GB SSD SATA III.

And crucial sells compatible drives up to 1 TB NVME and up to 2 TB 2.5" SSD.

Thanks.

Crucial (UK) now only seem to stock one compatible SSD in M.2 format, and that's 160gbp, so I'll probably just make some room on the supplied HDD for the time being.

All a bit academic at present, since there's no indication yet how far between China and here the machine has got. 10 days seems like an eternity when one's used to next-day delivery of bog-standard, off the shelf stuff.

OP here: just to close off this topic for now: HDD partitions duly manipulated, Linux Mint 19 installed.

SSD purchase postponed.

Thanks

Hi,

With the below spec for 5580:

One 2.5-inch hard drive
SATA (5400 RPM)
Up to 2 TB
One M.2 2230/2280 solid-state drive
PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe, up to 32 Gbps
Up to 512 GB

Can i have the 2TB hard drive as is and a SATA III SSD in M.2 form along??

Thanks,
Pramod

Hello Chris,

I have an Inspiron 15-5580 and wanted to install a Samsung SSD 980 1TB (NVMe). I did the cloning from Hard Disc to the SSD. The windows works but I had several shutdowns with Bleu screen.

I had the same problem with Samsung SSD 870 EVO, 1 To with standard 2.5-inch SATA.

Is there any incompatibility with 1TB SSD? If yes, it’s pity to be limited to 256 GB SATA3, M.2 or 512 GB NVMe, M.2.

Many thanks

@DraycottNeddy  Hi, I am using SAMSUNG 970 EVO PLUS NVME M2 SSD  from past couple of years. I have installed Ubuntu & Windows 10 both on this SSD. I also kept my old standard 1 TB HDD that shipped with inspiron 5580 for multimedia storage. My setup is working fine.
