Inspiron 15z 5523 memory maximum

Hello everyone who may be reading this.

I am posting this question due to some confusion regarding hardware specification on my Dell Inspiron 15z 5523 laptop.

At purchase time, it had 8 GB of Ram, and what I think was the current i7 processor for that day and age.

I'm pretty sure I've checked the owner's manual, but I'm not sure if the manual lists the total memory capacity and if it does, whether or not it states 8GB as the maximum RAM supported.

Some 3rd party vendors claim this laptop supports a maximum of 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR3-1600 SODIMM, but I'd prefer to get the actual and accurate specification from Dell if I can.

Thanks,

Adam

Crucial says 16 G and guarantees it if you buy using their memory configurator.

Dell's manual isn't clear.  It states that 8G modules are supported, but not the total max.

Bear in mind that the CPU sets the memory speed - which for any of the CPUs this system takes, is 1333 MHz.  Installing faster RAM simply causes the memory to down-clock -- the memory controller is aboard the CPU.

Thanks for your fast reply ejn63. As for the memory maximum (and vendor guarantee) I'll keep that in mind.

I notice that Crucial's update selection (to go to 16 GB) has more than one path (DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1866) and shows different latency choices.

I guess the best course of action is to pull one of the existing chips from the laptop and see if I can determine which type DDR3 is currently installed.

Based on the text up to 1600 MHz, dual-channel DDR3 configuration
from  inspiron-15z-5523_reference%20guide_en-us.pdf I have a feeling the RAM to purchase is DDR3-1600 as opposed to the higher value.

Since it's easy enough (on that model) to remove one screw from the underside to get to the RAM, I'll verify visually if the currently installed memory indicates its frequency.

Thanks again for your help and guidance on this @ejn63

Just an FYI. With these Dell Inspirons, I've updated the BIOS to the latest version before trying the memory upgrades. On my Inspiron 15r-5520 it holds 16gb not 8 like Dell Claims..

Now I'm upgrading 1 of the 4 Inspiron 13-7378 2-in-1 laptops to 32gb just to see if it'll handle more than with 16gb.. Dan

I'm aware that these are older posts but I just wanted to give some other folks this information. With that said, here it goes.

Over the years I've owned a lot of Dell Laptops. In 2008 I bought the Dell Latitude D-630. The Max Memory was 4gb until the last BIOS Update came out. It allowed the memory to max at 8gb.

In 2013 the Dell Inspiron 15r-2=5520 came out. The same thing happened with the BIOS Update with this laptop. I still have 3 of these laptops, (2 will be for friends that want Windows 7, the 3rd I use because I like Windows 7.)

Today I have 4 Dell Inspiron 13-7378 2-in-1 Laptop/Tablet. The max is 16gb but according to 3 people that have installed 32gb, they say it works. I will update this post after I install 32gb in this laptop I'm on right now.

Here's the deal. Sometimes Dell Engineers make Laptops that will allow for these memory Updates, through the BIOS Updates they release... This doesn't happen with all Dell Laptops but we'll see if 3rd is a Charm with my 13-7378.... DanMax...
