Inspiron 5558: Dim display

My Inspiron laptop (model: 5558), which runs perfectly until now, is becoming too dark or dim to see any display from the monitor. However, everything looks fine when connected to the external monitor. Looks like backlight display system is not working. I'd be grateful, if community members could share their experiences or suggestions on how to repair it. Thanks.
