Inspiron 7610 Second M.2 SSD slot ok for operating system?

Hi

I have just purchased the Inspiron 7610 with 512GB SSD installed with OS in slot 1 (2230 configuration)

I want to add a 2TB SSD (2280 config) as extra storage, but am aware that slot 2 will only allow the 2230 config, whereas slot one will allow both 2230 & 2280

If I simply swap the current 2230 config SSD with OS to slot 2 will the OS still work?

I hope that makes sense - thanks in advance

It should and if it does not boot from that drive tap F12 at boot and make sure to select Windows Boot Manager which will be on the 2230 drive. This description from the support page should help.

"The primary drive of your Inspiron 16 7610 is the drive where your operating system is installed."

I'm almost certain the SSD in slot 1 is a PCIe Gen 4 NVME SSD, because slot 1 is a Gen 4 PCIe slot.  If you move it over to slot 2, which is a Gen 3 slot, the SSD will run at half the speed.  Appreciable difference?  Depends on the program you're going to run.

I just added a PCIe Gen 3 SSD to my 7610 slot 2, which btw 2230 size SSDs are rather hard to find.  Before I went down that path, I opened it and confirmed the types of PCIe slots, and they are marked slot 1 PCIe 4.0 and slot 2 PCIe 3.0, thus the OS is on slot 1 SSD.

See the topic I've just posted - It may make you change how you work this, as the 2230 slot is very slow on write speeds.
