NVMe compatability Inspion 5570

Hello,

I have a Dell Inspiron 5570, and have noticed that there is a slot for a M.2 NVMe SSD.  I have done research, and I am having trouble understanding what specifications to look for before knowing for sure which particular one is compatible.  Specifically, I am looking at this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B083WNX8H6/ref=twister_B08414QWJQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Any idea if it will be compatible?

Thank you.

OK there are two things:

1) Form factor 2.5" and M.2 2280:

Dell Inspiron has two slots: 2.5" (inch) AND M.2 2280.
If you buy a new 5570 the 2.5" slot is used for the OS.
The M.2 slot is empty

2) Interface SATA and NVMe/PCIexpress:

The 2.5" slot has a SATA interface
The M.2 slot a NVMe/PCIexpress interface but can also handle the SATA interface.

The max speeds for SATA is ~550 Mb/s
The max speeds for NVMe/PCIexpress is much higher and for the Dell Inspiron 5570 is the max speed ~1550 Mb/s
Conclusion: even in an 5570 the NVMe/PCIexpress drive is 3 times faster as the SATA interface!

To answer your question:
- this Kingston A400 has a M.2 2280 form factor so it will fit in your laptop
- this Kingston A400 has a SATA interface, which will maybe work in the 5570 but is 3 times slower as a real NVMe/PCIexpress drive.

My advice:

Go for a M.2 2280 drive with a NVMe/PCIexpress interface. They are a little bit more expensive but not that much anymore!
You don't need the fast ones, because the NVMe/PCIexpress interface in the 5570 is max. ~1550 Mb/s but if they have a faster interface it's not a problem.

If you like Kingston: maybe the Kingston A2000 500GB is an option.

Thank you so much for your response.  I bought the kingston SSD you recommended, and now my laptop is working better than before.

This reply really helped me as I didn't know anything about the difference between a stock hard drive and ssd until today. I'm going to upgrade to an ssd, taking into account that the performance is limited in the Nvme, which one would you recommend?

Thanks in advance

Hi Stuast09,

Today I think there are no really bad SSD drivers anymore, but because of the very low prices I recommend at least 512Gb and NVMe interface.

You can think about:

- Crucial P2 512GB
- Kingston A2000 512GB
- WD Blue SN500 512GB
- Kingston A2000 512GB

They all have a good performance/price index, but there are of-course many more options!

Thanks very much for the help,

I was looking at the addlink s70, what's your opinion on that? Would I be better off getting something cheaper as I can't use the full power of it anyway?

One last question sorry, do you think I have any need to add an extra 8gb of ram also? I use the laptop for music production and a small bit of gaming.

Thanks again

I have not any experience with addlink but if I read the reviews it's a very fast 3x4 lane NVMe drive. As you know, in your Dell only 2 lanes are used, so imho this drive is a little bit overkill. The drives I suggested are in the range between 55 and 65 Euro.

About the RAM: Check your memory status in your Taskmanager. If you see that the memory is running high most of the time, spend a few bucks for extra RAM. It really depends on the programs you are running.

Just checked my memory status and it's at 83% so I think with the money I'll save going for the cheaper ssd, I'll get the extra 8gb of ram.

TThanks very much for all of your help, I really appreciate it.

Extra advantage by adding an extra 8Gb bank:
Assuming your current memory configuration is 1 x 8 GB now. By adding an extra 8Gb bank, the two banks can operate in dual channel mode which makes your system a little bit faster
