Problem after Windows 2004 update
Inspiron 3552 fails at POST. Have created USB Recovery Media but this fails when trying to format the disk - Error Code 0x80070057. Anybody got any ideas of the way forward?

Yes, that's exactly what it means - you need a replacement drive.

Is this system the model with a 32G eMMC flash drive, or a hard drive?
Run an extended Dell diagnostic on the system (F12 at powerup).

Model has a hard drive
Will try diagnostic as suggested but I think I have been down that route already.

Make sure you do a surface test on the drive (extended test). This will take several hours.
I suspect what you're going to find is bad sectors - meaning the drive needs to be replaced. It's not uncommon for a drive that's on the edge of failure to be pushed over it by a major update, which significantly thrashes a hard drive.

Error report showed error code 2000-0151
Validation 92525
Hard Drive incorrect status 3R
SMART predictive failure
Extended test stopped at Hard Drive Test with red X
Nothing further happened after 5 hours!!
I presume this means that the Hard Drive is defunct.
Thanks for your help
