RAM is DDR3L 1600 and with 2 SODIMM slots the maximum is 16 GB (8 GB in each slot).  As for an M.2 SSD, the 5558 does not have an M.2 SSD slot. You can pull the HDD and replace it with a 2.5" SSD. Drive specs are for a 2'5" SATA 6 Gbps and you can install an up to 2 TB SSD (per Crucial compatible specs)

Are you sure?

Isn't 5558 has only one memory slot?

Absolutely positive. Go to this Dell support page for the 5558. Possibly you are thinking of the 5551 which has one slot.

Also the Crucial memory page confirms the slots on the 5558 at this site. And this forum post from the moderator.

Is it recommended to use the SSD in DVD writer slot ?

It depends on what you want to use the SSD for.  If it's for storage, it should work.  If it's as a boot device, it will not.
