upgrade ram and SSD inspiron 14 3480

Hi everyone

I just bought an Inspiron 14 3000 (3480). Very good price but SSD and memory are both quite small. It it possible to upgrade to 8GB and change the SSD drive to a sata 512 or so? According to Crucial the SATA ssd drive is compatible and I found a compatible 4gb DDR4 available to purchase. The questions I have in particular

1- accessibility of drive lodging and RAM. I haven't opened it up yet so I'm wondering if someone has opened similar models

2- installation of Windows 10 on new hard drive. Do you need to re-enter the software ID or is it recognized automatically as locked to the motherboard or similar?

Many thanks!

Hello,

As you can see in this manual 3480 can use such an ssd also you can ignore the storage limit of 256GB this limit indicates that dell tested the system until the mentioned limit and not with bigger ones

Be careful.  This model is sold with either a 64G SSD or a 2.5" hard drive.  The unit having the 64G SSD has an embedded (eMMC) SSD that cannot be upgraded.  The advice to check inside the system is excellent:  older models designed this way do not have a socket for a 2.5" SSD or hard drive.

1. Crucial might not be accurate, you will need to actually open it up to see what parts you will need.

2. Please send a picture of bottom case and front of keyboard. I feel you will need to disassembly the keyboard as well.

3. When installing windows fresh version, you will not need ID or product key, the motherboard has already binded with a key, the windows will automatically activated once connected to the internet.

Sorry other question for the community.

I see the laptop seems to have installed a PCIE SSD drive. Is it better to replace with a PCIE one or with SATA?

Thanks!

Thanks for replies. Much appreciated. The manual suggests only to remove back cover. I hope that's the case. It looks like the SSD drive is installed on a Intel Optane memory module which perhaps makes things a bit more complicated.

Hi.

I also have an inspiron 14 (3480) and am looking to upgrade the SSD from the pitiful 128GB installed to a 512GB. The SSD is an M.2 2230 form factor but I'm struggling to find a similar one. Crucial, Kingston and Samsung claim the M.2 2280 is compatible. The slot indeed seems to be long enough to lodge a longer SSD. Did anyone manage to replace the SSD with a 2280?

And if yes, is there anything I should watch out for in the process of cloning the hard drive and replacing it? From various posts, it looks like during the cloning one can resize the new partition and that should be all.

Thanks for your help

Hi all.

It seems like my post from last night wasn't actually posted.

I am about to replace the 128GB SSD with a compatible crucial or Kikgston. However the installed one is a 2230 form factor and I seem to find all 2280 claiming full compatibility. Indeed the slot is a lot longer than the SSD currently installed. Does anyone have experience on replacing the 2230 with a 2280? Any problem to report with that?

Thanks
