16GB ram in my XPS17 (L702X) NON 3D

Hey everyone, I've had my XPS 17 (L702X) NON-3D for several months and have enjoyed it so far. When I bought it I ordered it with 4GB ram with the intent of going to 16GB. I was told by 3 different Dell people when I was ready to upgrade to 16GB of ram I would have no problem. Later as everyone knows this was not the case, only the 3D version had 4 DIMMS for ram. So when I received my laptop one of the first things I did was put in 8GB ram and it's been going strong every since.

Recently I received a email from Newegg about a "FRIDAY ONLY: Ultra-SECRET Black Friday Deals!" in that add they had some CORSAIR 16GB (2 x 8G) DDR3 1333 Laptop Memory on sale. When I first recieved my laptop I looked all over for 2 - 8G sticks and could not find it anywhere so I was really supprised when I seen this. I went ahead and ordered it since it was only on sale for 24 hours, I figured if it didn't work I could send it back or ebay it. Anyone know why these wouldn't work? Thanks

I have this laptop, non-3D version and only two slots using 2 8GB DDR3 SODIMMS.  They are matching PATRIOT sticks.  It works great and no issues at 16GB Ram.  The Intel chipset specs says it supports up to 16GB and that is true when using either the 2 or 4 slot motherboard.  Honestly I have not tried 4 slots with 4 8GB SODIMMS because my system on has the two.  Also I have this working with two external screens and the internal screen at the same time.  I have to boot with them all connected and it works using the Nvidia 555M.  The Intel disables itself.  Best laptop ever.  I love it.

If you check, the XPS17-L702X happens to be 3D and they have 4 memory slots  for 4GB memory for slot and only holds a  total of 16GB only..I happen to have 1 and the XPS17R  isnt 3D.....

Hey caseyrebel, my XPS17 L702X only came with 8GB of RAM (2, 4GB chips) so I ordered 2 more 4GB chips and much to my surprise when I opened the access panel I only see two slots!!! What the heck? Are the other two somewhere else? I even used the tool from Crucial.com to scan my system, which I have used on many other systems, and it says there should be 4 slots...

Any thoughts?

Memory Configuration for the XPS 17 (L702X)

To determine how many DIMM slots there are, look to see if the XPS L702X has 3D or not.
The 3D systems are not Optimus systems and do not have WIDI support.
Only the 3D system with the 3gb video card has 4 dimm slots

There are four system boards available for the XPS 17 (L702X) and they are:

  1. Non 3D, 1 gb video ram, 2 dimm slots
  2. 3D, 1 gb video ram, 2 dimm slots
  3. Non 3D, 3 gb video ram, 2 dimm slots
  4. 3D, 3 gb video ram, 4 dimm slots

The notebooks with 2 DIMM slots CAN use up to 16GB RAM. 2x8GB 1333 SO-DIMM DDR3.
There have been numerous reports in this forum that substantiate this.

Thanks for the information Bay Wolf!!!

I just checked the system configuration as listed by Dell and I did find this "NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M 3GB graphics with Optimus" So it looks like I do only have the two slots! I was hoping to not have to buy 2 8GB chips since I already have 2 4GB chips in the system, but it looks like I will have to and try to sell the original 4GB chips that came with the PC.

Again thanks for the information it was very, very helpful!

should work find.  Although Dell state that the L702x can only support 16gb (I have the 3d model), I have removed two 4 gb and added two 8gb - the 4 gb of ram is recognized with no errors.

This same thing happened to me.  I was lied to in the online chat that it accepted 4X4GB and I would later be able to upgrade from 8GB to 16GB, then a year later when I went to upgrade I found out I cannot.  I would have bought the 3D version had they told me that was the case, but now I am just stuck with a computer I cannot add ram to.

You may well find it'll still take 16 G as 2X8G modules.

Just found this thread and this is my exact issue/concern.  I might try the 2X8GB and see if it works to get 16gb total

sorry to jump in so late: what is the difference between 1600 MHz & 1333 MHz? also there is 10600 & 12800 what effect if any would there be if any?
ie:
16GB (8GBx2) Crucial PC-12800 SO-DIMM 1600MHz DDR3 Memory laptop

v
s

Crucial 16GB Kit 2 x 8GB DDR3 1333 MHz PC3-10600 1.35V / 1.5V Sodimm Memory

both are crucial but give different values its very confusing any help would be appreciated

Hi every one. I know that this post is pretty old, but it's been so useful for me that I want to post my experience on upgrading from 8 GB to 16 GB. I own a DELL XPS 17 (L702X / P09E002) with Windows Ultimate 64, 500 BG HDD (7200 rpm). Graphics card is a NVidia GeForce GT 550M, processor is i7-2630QM. Display resolution is 1920 x 1080.

After googling for a couple of weeks I opened the bottom door and discovered 2 DIMM slots with 4 GB each one. So I decided to try and buy a Corsair Vengeance 16 GB kit (2 x 8GB) with part number: CMSX16Gx3M2B1600C9. I bought it from amazon

www.amazon.es/.../ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00;psc=1

PC boots perfectly and next step is to add a SSD drive and transfer windows to that drive.

--- UPDATE ---

Finally I bought 1 512 GB SSD Samsung PRO and cloned the OS (automagically because it clones itself during execution) and after a couple of weeks I decided to add a second SSD (256 GB this time). So I have a 5 years old laptop that now is a top-notch laptop.

Hope this helps others.

Cheers!

I purchased one 8gb chip and now have 12g of memory showing.   Also 120gb ssd drive from Kingston; the clone software worked perfectly and quickly.
