2x8gb memory module on XPS15 (501/502)

Hi

I am planning to install 2x8gb 204-pin DDR3 1333 MHz on my XPS 15.

I have checked with Dell support and they have informed me that it would not work. I tried to buy 8gb modules from Dell but they declined my request.

Has anyone tried to use 8gb (x 1 or 2) with this models?

Any suggestion?

Regards,

Tarecle

Dell is correct- max RAM is 4G/slot or 8G total.  8G soDIMMs will not work.

Any reason why you need to install a 2 x 8GB? Is it because you have only 2 memory slots?

I don't think it is a good idea to try if dell already told you that it will not work(unless you already have them in your hand that you can try without buying them).

I did see somewhere in the specification that each memory slots support upto 4GB.

Share your result if it was successful.

The reason is my applications require more RAM. I need to run 3 VMs and their total memory requirement is 10G to avoid more swap space usage. Sometime Dell technical support talks rubbish. Like you cannot use more the 120G HDD on Inspiron 6400 etc etc ..... But this time they are correct. soDIMMs will not work on these models.

hi

you can try buying outside

previously, one of my HP system comes with 2GB (HP says 2GB is the max limit and you can't upgrade. if you do yourself, your warranty will be void)

But i tried to put 2 X 2GB. it worked very well and i didn't informed HP. whenever i have to call HP support, i replace the RAM which comes with system (2 X 1 GB).

try yourself, nothing going to loose
