AC adapter not recognized Inspiron 6400

Hi,

I have a problem with my Inspiron6400. The AC-adapter powers and runs the system correctly but does not charge the battery. In the BIOS set up I read "unknown AC adapter installed", which of course isn't the case: it is the original one that came with the laptop. I updated the BIOS to the latest version (A17) but this doesn't solve the problem. Can anyone help me, please?

Hi RuuddunBras,

Thank you for the reply.

There may be a temporary issue with the link. You may try the link couple of times and it should open up the article.

Hi RuuddunBras,

Welcome to the Community.

I would suggest you to check with a good known adapter to isolate the issue. If the issue persists with a different adapter as well, system board needs replacement.

You may refer to the Dell Article 266440 by clicking the link mentioned below:

Try another Dell OEM AC adapter.  If that doesn't solve the problem, your system needs a mainboard repair or replacement.  Since the power jack on this model is part of the mainboard, you're looking at a minimum of $150 in repairs -- perhaps not worth it on a system this old.
